Class Notes: Film Studios
Film Studios: Mr Grimsley (Objective 1)
Learning Objective:
1) To be able to indicate how films are produced/Distributed
2) To research and decide upon the film studio who will produce/distribute your film.
What is a studio?
A studio is a company that produces/distributes motion pictures.
What are the main studios?
Fox
Paramount
Sony/ Columbia
Universal
Walt Disney
Warner Brothers
These 6 are the top studios that produce/distribute films , and they all own sub divisions which target small films due to the budget of the film or chosen by the genre of the film.
On the distribution side , they need to put the film out to the public from everything that happens in-between production (making the film) and exhibitom (people watching the film in cinema or on DVD and television ect , for film to receive an age certificate by companies such as BBFC and MPAA; and marketing and promotion of the film from the paid 'above the line' advertising such as trailers and posters ect. Or 'below the line' which is not paid for such as interview with a star in a newspaper.

Lesson on Foely Sounds
In this lesson , we learnt about sounds. But mainly focussed on Foley sounds by watching a video below all about it.
About Foely Sound:
Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects which are added in post production to enhance the quality of audio for films. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. The best foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the audience.
We also learnt about these three types of sounds:
Realism: Using sounds that are naturalistic
Hyper-realism: accentuating sounds
Unrealism/Surrealism: using totally contrasting sounds to the original ones

Foely Sounds
Foley Sounds
This is my groups fight Sequence and using our editing skills and what we learnt about 'Foley sounds' in our media lesson. We got given the task to film a fight sequence , then produce our own Foley sounds using materials and objects around us to add Foley to our short film.
Firstly our group was made up from the following members:
Me - Dan
Conor
and James
The first thing we had to do was sort out the roles of everyone .As a group , James decided we would be the camera man and me and Conor would be the actors, and got help from our supporting actors outside from our media class of Jake and Tom.
Next we sat down and thought of a narrative for our fight:
The narrative we chose on was to have a rival teenage gang having a fight. To have realism about teenagers in our society involving gang crime , shown through the media.
However , once went out in our media lesson to film this , many of our friends wasn't allowed to come out for a few mins to help be in our fight scene. Therefore , we had to change from our plan of a 5v5 gang fight. To just a 2v2 fight.
Once we finished filming out fight sequence , we uploaded our film clips onto the apple macs and used final cut pro to do the editing part of our task.e went through all the different clips we had as we took shots in different angles and as a group we put the clips together to produce a final fight scene clip. We use the tool 'cut' to shorten each individual clip down as possible , to ensure when played they are short and change quickly to add a fast pace to our scene top create excitement for our audience.
Once to scene fight scene was put together , we had to go off and record our Foley sounds for our clip. We got given objects from out teacher to help create the right sounds for fighting , such as carrots to create a snap. Punching meat to add a slap sound when punching someone.
In our group we used the meat for our punches sounds.
Snaps of the carrots to had snaps when kicking.
Crushed nuts on the tables to add a broken nose effect when a punch connected with the nose area.
Footsteps to overlap the footstep record in the fight scene to make sure its more louder for the audience.
Loud bangs on the floor for when a person lands onto the concrete.
Once the sounds was recorded we uploaded them to final cut pro on our saved fight scene and added the sounds in when watching the clips to ensure that the timing was perfect. We didn't want any late sounds or sound to come early otherwise our fight scene would look stupid and unprofessional .
Previous to the Foley sounding we did improvise by making sounds. Claire made sounds for the fight scene in which turn t out rather well. Although, the sounds produced was good we did choose to use the vegetables to see how it could turn out; especially if we took this avenue within our own opening title sequence.
Overall , as a group we produced a very good fight scene and the folly sounds we added to the clip , suited and was timed perfectly.
For myself personally, this task was very enjoyable getting involved with the production and learning of a whole new type of sound. In addition , the making and editing of this short clip , help myu confidence and earning of final cut pro on how to edit and use the software. to give me confidence for coming up to producing our title sequence.
If i could do this again , when making the sounds for the fight scene. I would have some sort of video player to watch our clip when making the sound to make it easier when the sound is needed as you can time it with the actual clip. For example , when doing the footsteps , it would be handy to be able to watch the clip so i can see when someone takes a step and time it with that. As we took about 5 different examples from guessing how many steps we took and chose the best one , which was very frustrating and time consuming.
