Second Shot Review

Recording Session 2

The second session was a disaster!
Firstly we started working and after 5 minutes the battery had run out. Luckily we had spares with us too back us up. However , them batteries ran out within a short time too (around 2 minutes). After this we went to the shop to buy some more batteries. When got back and set up the camera , for some reason the batteries never fitted and was a waste of money. We called it a day and went back home as the day was a disaster and we only done 1 shot.

Next time , we shall hopefully use a different camera or hopefully ask the school to provide us with a load more batteries which will fit for the camera.

Apartment 6 Folder

Made this folder to show and keep all the files information and ect we need for Apartment 6.
At the moment the folder , holds the title sequence , diary , passports and letters, class notes and any other useful information and work which links within our films title sequence for Apartment 6. This helps to keep everything organized together and easy to carry about and show to my group.

Lesson on Foely Sounds

In this lesson , we learnt about sounds. But mainly focussed on Foley sounds by watching a video below all about it. About Foely Sound: Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects which are added in post production to enhance the quality of audio for films. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. The best foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the audience. We also learnt about these three types of sounds: Realism: Using sounds that are naturalistic Hyper-realism: accentuating sounds Unrealism/Surrealism: using totally contrasting sounds to the original ones

First Shoot Review

Feedback from our first shoot:

This is a print screen from one of the shots we done yesterday. On the flip camera the shots looked fine and a bit dark which is what we wanted. As well , we believed that we could brighten it up once edited. When uploaded and watched back the clip , they was even more darker and as you can see its complete darkness and found out that you cant add brightness into the shot once edited as it would stand out when watched back and for the audience will notice it and feel it doesn't suit and looks weird.
From our first shoot , we feel although the clips never worked as we wished. We have learnt that we need as much light as possible and when uploaded to quick time , it will come out or darker and its easier to edit to make it darker  than bring the brightness up. We also going to bring lights/torches to bring light for the shots and try and reflect it of walls and ect when we next film. Although , only one clip worked , we feel we have learnt something new for the future which we will be sure not to make the same mistake again.

Tour of the Set/Apartment

This is video showing the apartment/set we are working on to film our title sequence. I take you through each room giving you a in sight tour of the place.

Tilte Sequence Progress

Today we started filming the opening of the title sequence through hiring a camera from school to take out with us. We are using an old small looking apartment which is exactly what we were looking for , for our film. We filmed around the apartment to document what it looks like and a insight to the set we will be working on in the next few week which will be uploaded soon.
So far , our title sequence is going well , with the opening shots filmed perfectly. We are currently discussing when to next film and be looking to buy our props which is in need for the next few shots. We are hopping to stick to schedule and have hopefully the main bit to be filmed before Friday the 21st.

Facebook Group Chat

I decided to set up a group chat on facebook to make an easy way for everyone to discuss and share any ideas that they came up with. In addition , i thought it a good way to organize when we can meet up next to film ect so everyone can talk to everyone when ever they wanted.

Audience Profile

                             Audience Profile For Apartment 6
Demographics
The type of people that we are aiming for to watch this film will be:
Males, lower middle class and young adults/students.

Our main target audience will be males from around the age of 15-30. Secondly our second target audience will be 15-30 females.

Psychographics
This film will gain more of the male’s interest rather than the females as from research horrors tend to be watched by more male audience than females. But females will be interested as well who are all fans of paranormal thriller. In addition  think this also is the kind of scary film that a boy may take their girlfriend to watch with them.

I believe that the people that will like this film will enjoy the adrenaline rush and like being scared. I think a key hobby would be fans of paranormal TV shows for example most haunted and the séance shows of Derren Brown. As well , hobbies possibly reading and music and like to socialize.

Foely Sounds

Foley Sounds This is my groups fight Sequence and using our editing skills and what we learnt about 'Foley sounds' in our media lesson. We got given the task to film a fight sequence , then produce our own Foley sounds using materials and objects around us to add Foley to our short film. Firstly our group was made up from the following members: Me - Dan Conor and James The first thing we had to do was sort out the roles of everyone .As a group , James decided we would be the camera man and me and Conor would be the actors, and got help from our supporting actors outside from our media class of Jake and Tom. Next we sat down and thought of a narrative for our fight: The narrative we chose on was to have a rival teenage gang having a fight. To have realism about teenagers in our society involving gang crime , shown through the media. However , once went out in our media lesson to film this , many of our friends wasn't allowed to come out for a few mins to help be in our fight scene. Therefore , we had to change from our plan of a 5v5 gang fight. To just a 2v2 fight. Once we finished filming out fight sequence , we uploaded our film clips onto the apple macs and used final cut pro to do the editing part of our task.e went through all the different clips we had as we took shots in different angles and as a group we put the clips together to produce a final fight scene clip. We use the tool 'cut' to shorten each individual clip down as possible , to ensure when played they are short and change quickly to add a fast pace to our scene top create excitement for our audience. Once to scene fight scene was put together , we had to go off and record our Foley sounds for our clip. We got given objects from out teacher to help create the right sounds for fighting , such as carrots to create a snap. Punching meat to add a slap sound when punching someone. In our group we used the meat for our punches sounds. Snaps of the carrots to had snaps when kicking. Crushed nuts on the tables to add a broken nose effect when a punch connected with the nose area. Footsteps to overlap the footstep record in the fight scene to make sure its more louder for the audience. Loud bangs on the floor for when a person lands onto the concrete. Once the sounds was recorded we uploaded them to final cut pro on our saved fight scene and added the sounds in when watching the clips to ensure that the timing was perfect. We didn't want any late sounds or sound to come early otherwise our fight scene would look stupid and unprofessional . Previous to the Foley sounding we did improvise by making sounds. Claire made sounds for the fight scene in which turn t out rather well. Although, the sounds produced was good we did choose to use the vegetables to see how it could turn out; especially if we took this avenue within our own opening title sequence. Overall , as a group we produced a very good fight scene and the folly sounds we added to the clip , suited and was timed perfectly. For myself personally, this task was very enjoyable getting involved with the production and learning of a whole new type of sound. In addition , the making and editing of this short clip , help myu confidence and earning of final cut pro on how to edit and use the software. to give me confidence for coming up to producing our title sequence. If i could do this again , when making the sounds for the fight scene. I would have some sort of video player to watch our clip when making the sound to make it easier when the sound is needed as you can time it with the actual clip. For example , when doing the footsteps , it would be handy to be able to watch the clip so i can see when someone takes a step and time it with that. As we took about 5 different examples from guessing how many steps we took and chose the best one , which was very frustrating and time consuming.

Brainstorm ideas of title sequence

Brainstorm idea of our title sequence

Title Sequence Ideas

Title Sequence Ideas:
In todays lesson, we started brainstorming ideas for the title sequence of our film idea.  As a group we decided to base our film title sequence on thematic ideas rather than focusing on the narrative side. Once the title sequence has been watched, we want the audience to have a idea of what the film is about through the hint and clues given within the clip.

Title Sequence

Location
The location of the title sequence is going to be filmed within a old apartment/house as it’s the main thematic about our film. Each clip will be filmed within different locations of the house but extreme close up so it doesn’t give away the identify of the person and the house itself.

Idea

The key thematic ideas of the film are:
·      The apartment/House
·      Identity lost – Passports, Credit Cards, Newspapers, and Photos.
·      Paranormal Presence in the house
·      Diary

During the title sequence we want to include most of the thematic based around the film.

We had ideas of starting off with a clip of the old door and the door number there ‘26’ and a hand comes into the clip and pushes the door open of the house which is the main aspect of the film.

Once inside, we want to use close up on parts of the body of the person looking round the house doesn’t give away the identity of the person. Linking within the theme of his lost identity when he was child.

The diary is a key aspect in the film, which is what the person is looking for, the diary is open on a desk and flicks through the pages revealing clues of the film in what’s it about. For example, photos of the family witch she never knew, passports credit cards. All these are key aspects of the theme of his lost identity and his lost family history.

Editing:
During the cut scenes of each clip we want them to gradually get shorter and shorter when the flash back from the person to dairy. So therefore it builds up pace to the sequence through short and quick shots so it creates excitement, tension and suspense for the audience to link in with in the horror genre of our film.

The music we have ideas for which we are going to use is a spooky background soundtrack, and then paranormal sounds start gradually joining together to build suspense to fit in within the short clips of the soundtrack as they get faster.
The music will get faster and louder to build suspense and random bangs and etc. to hint towards to paranormal side to our film about the evil presence in the house.

The lighting of the film will be mainly dark to create a tense atmosphere for the audience. We were thinning to start the film more light and as the sequence goes on, it gradually gets darker to suggest the presence is trapping her and end with a bright open shot to suggest she reborn again after she found out everything about her family.

Storyboards

Storyboards
These are the story boards we designed to make our title sequence.
How we done it?
During a double media lesson on Monday , me and my group sat down and brainstormed the themes/ideas ect down so we have a rough idea of what to include(  the photo ).  In addition , we logged onto the Apple Macs and started researching into films similar to ours and from the studies of title sequences in lesson time , gave us a few ideas that we would like to use for our film with our notes. We then went back to the 'drawing board' and planned out a story board. Once we felt it was good enough , we drew up our final design witch is shown below.
Any problems?
At first we started to plan to use some paranormal action for our title sequence to build and create suspense once the music gets faster. We then recored some doors slamming and ect in our first shoot. However after thinking about it and everyone sharing their opinion , we felt that it would look more like a trailer as we thought that would be seen in a movie trailer not a title opening sequence. Therefore we decided to use them ideas and scrap them.
What we have achieved?
Well the plan was that we wanted to make the title sequence , to show to audience what our film is about by hinting  some themes that run throughout our film without giving to much away of course , so the audience gets thinking before hand, and gets engaged.  Overall ,we feel that we have achieved our target.

Mars Attack Title Sequence Analysis

Mars Attack Title Sequence
The opening title sequence opens with the warner brother’s pitchers logo showing this is a Hollywood film and who the producers of the film are. In addition, they edited the entrance clip of warner brothers by applying a UFO flying round in the sky, showing that UFOs play a aspect in the film.
It then opens with a narrative by showing a clip of man coming out taking his rubbish to the bin, just doing the normal day life. The Asian man then starts talking to his neighbour and they ask ‘what is that noise?’ which indicates something is coming to the audience building up suspense. It shows the road hill top with a  red glow raising up           over the hill ,the glow  is red which can suggest there is a death and blood throughout the film , from the audience and the film being based around ‘Mars’ you think its aliens or UFO coming up the hill. Then the children start running out screaming ‘Daddy what is that!’.  The music is an orchestra  group with violins ect and starts getting more faster and louder building suspense and creating a scared atmosphere as if something terrible about to happen.
As the glow gets closer , its actually cows running down on fire. Then a UFO flies off behind the house , showing to the audience that these aliens are coming in contact with earth and are going to cause chaos to all the Americans.
The next scene follows the UFO out to space as its flying back home to ‘Mars’ the names of the actors starting appearing rotating in a circular loop like UFOs themselves still linking to the SCI-FI alien themes. The planet Mars is still red with the colour suggesting the planet is dangerous , and suggesting they will cause death and blood. In addition the earth is seen behind in the distance of mars which shows the aliens target is to wipe off the planet earth
The music slows down and goes in to a space sounds of UFO’s creating a spooky atmosphere .
Hundreds of UFOS start to rise from planet mars and they are all heading towards earth and the music starts getting faster and louder , hinting to the audience they are going to attack earth and cause chaos like a huge war.
The sequence continues to cut into different angels showing all the thousands of spaceships UFO together like a huge army heading towards earth for a battle with the humans possibly to wipe the human race and cause death and chaos there. However you don’t actually see what’s driving these UFO’s still so it’s a still a mystery what they look like and ect and the music continues  to get louder and quicker to build up tension as they get closer.
A green glow comes out over the scene of the UFOS traveling to earth and it spells ‘Mars Attack’ the colour green still suggest the science sci-fi film it has
